When you go to Japan you should have a stopover in the former imperial capital of Japan, a beautiful traditional city, called Kyoto.
Must-sees and major tourist attractions are the Fushimi Inari-Taisha Shrine, and the Imperial Palace where I recommend booking a free tour which takes around one hour. Also Nanzen-ji Temple, Kiyomizu-Dera Temple and the world famous Kinkaku-ji Temple are some of the most popular buildings in Japan. With its over 1000 Buddhist temples, Kyoto gives you a fascinating impression of Japanese Zen Buddhism.
Sightseeing can make you very hungry, and I decided to try a very traditional Sushi restaurant called Gion Matsudaya. Close to the Kamo River, there are more very nice restaurants with a large choice of sushi and sashimi dishes, as well as the delicious Wagyu Kobe beef. If you love sweets then you must try a green tea desert.
